What to Wear When the Casino Floats

The single most-asked question our booking desk fields is not about stakes or cabins. It is about clothes. The answer is simpler than people fear and slightly more specific than they hope.

The baseline: smart casual, always

Shipboard casinos run a smart-casual floor by default. For our events that means: shoes that are not thongs, collars encouraged but not required, and whatever the guest is comfortable in from there. The practical notes matter more than the rules. Ballrooms are air-conditioned and decks are not, so the winning outfit is the one with a jacket layer that comes off and goes back on a dozen times across an evening.

When the dress code climbs

Three formats raise the bar. Themed evenings carry a suggested look on the invitation, and the room is better the more guests lean in. The VIP salon is black tie by tradition, not by rule, and guests who dress down tend to dress up for the second night. And gala fundraisers are formal by definition; the photographers are part of the point. If an invitation does not name a dress code, smart casual is always safe. If it does name one, it means it.

Pack one outfit for the final table you plan to make. Confidence is a dress code too.

What the regulars actually pack

Ask a seasoned voyage player and you get the same shortlist. One outfit they would wear to a good restaurant, for the final table and the awards dinner. Comfortable layers for long sessions at the felt. Deck clothes for port days that are genuinely separate from table clothes, because a Rottnest bike hire and a seat at a poker table call for different shoes. And one thing with a little shine, because there is always a night that calls for it.

Take it with you

  • Default is smart casual; thongs are the only hard line on the gaming floor.
  • Ballrooms are cold, decks are warm: layers beat single outfits every voyage.
  • Theme nights, salon evenings and galas each climb the formality ladder; invitations say which.
  • Pack one properly good outfit for the awards dinner regardless of the dress code.

The FAQ page covers the rest of the practical questions, and the themed evenings page shows what the dressed nights actually look like when the ship leans in.
