The House That Sailed the Game
Horizon Cruise Agency is a Fremantle event company that builds poker tournaments, casino floors and gaming hospitality aboard cruise liners. Ten seasons, eighteen championship series and one conviction: the voyage is part of the prize.
From one chartered deck to a season at sea
In 2016 Adrian Cole chartered a single deck on a liner docked at Fremantle to run a poker night for forty friends. The dealer cancelled the morning of the event, so he dealt it himself, and the guests spent the next six months asking when the next one was.
The answer became a business. The agency now charters floor space aboard three partner vessels, employs a permanent tournament crew, and runs a members' league whose finals are played at sea each season. Corporate events and private charters fill the weeks between series.
What has not changed is the operating idea: serious gaming run properly, on a ship worth sailing on, with hospitality that treats non-players as guests rather than luggage.
"I wanted a poker night worth dressing for. It turns out a lot of other people did too."
Ten seasons, charted
The first deck
One chartered deck, forty guests, a founder dealing the cards himself.
First series
The inaugural three-day championship voyage sells out its first 120-seat field.
The league
Members' league launches at the terminal venue, feeding qualifiers to the finals voyage.
Full season
A three-vessel season calendar: series, salons, corporate nights and charity galas.
The people who run the floor
Tournament direction, event production, hospitality and operations: the four desks every voyage answers to.
Adrian Cole
Writes every championship structure himself and still takes a shift behind the dealing box on opening nights.
Elena Marchetti
Two hundred shipboard productions and counting. The person who knows where the service lift squeaks on every vessel.
Marcus Doyle
Twelve years directing floors. Runs the league, coaches the masterclass voyage and rules on every disputed hand.
Priya Venkat
Runs the guest programme, the concierge desk and the manifest that keeps four hundred people where they should be.
On the shelf
WA Event of the Year
For the 2024 Southern Cross Invitational, a two-night charter that rebooked before the ship docked.
Best Tourism Experience
Recognising the championship series as a visitor product for Fremantle and the south-west coast.
Industry Innovation
For the members' league model that turned a casual event series into a year-round community.
What a floating event owes the ocean
The product is the coastline, so the coastline gets a say in how we work.
Safety and comfort, written down
Guests should never have to think about either, which is why we think about them constantly.
Gaming integrity
Licensed dealers, supervised cages, published structures and rulings that follow the tournament director's written authority. Charity formats operate under the applicable WA gaming permits.
Maritime safety
All gaming aboard falls under the vessel's safety regime: muster procedures on boarding, crew accreditation checked by our operations desk, and marine liability cover on every charter.
Guest welfare
Responsible service of alcohol, responsible gaming information at every floor, a medical contact on every voyage and a desk that actually answers when something comes up.
Four commitments we do not bend
Published structures, always
Blind sheets, payout schedules and house rules go public before bookings open. Nobody buys a seat into a surprise.
Non-players are guests
Every product designs for the people not holding cards: port calls, tastings, deck events and a host whose job is them.
One accountable producer
Every booking gets a named producer with authority to fix things. No relay races between departments when the ship is sailing.
Fremantle is home
We hire local, book local suppliers first, and keep the calendar built around the port that gave the agency its start.
Evenings people still talk about
The storm series
A swell kept the ship at anchor an extra night. The field played the longest day two in our history and called it the best series yet.
The $2 million gala
A charity evening that passed two million dollars raised across our gala formats, celebrated mid-voyage with the whole room.
The youngest champion
A 22-year-old league qualifier took the season 12 championship, having learned the game on our teaching tables two seasons earlier.
"Somewhere between the second coffee and the third port call, a tournament becomes a holiday. That is the whole product."
